Why is the Void Chasing You?¿Por qué te persigue el Vacío?

In this challenge, you'll use the Void Spreading Enemy from Threadbare to build a short chase scene. You'll guide the Void along a path at a set speed while creating a playable route the player has to survive, using TileMaps, obstacles, and other game assets to make the chase more challenging or hectic.

Keep it small and don't worry about getting everything right. Try things, make changes, and see how far you can get. It may get messy, and that's okay!

Get set up in Godot and BackstitchPrepárate en Godot y Backstitch PlayJugar

Start from your team's shared void-challenge branch. If you created it together during Session 5, you're ready to go. If you're working on your own — or your project doesn't have a void-challenge branch yet — off in Backstitch or Git and call it void-challenge before you begin.

Then open the void_challenge scene. You'll find it in the Template Quest folder, or search for void_challenge in the Godot FileSystem. It's a small experimental scene, separate from the main Threadbare game, and it isn't fully set up yet.

Play it once. Notice what seems like it should do: follow a path, spread across a special Void layer, and threaten the player during the chase. Then notice what isn't working yet. Getting the Void Spreading Enemy working is the challenge, so you'll be building something new while working with pieces Threadbare already gives you.

So what is this chase about?Entonces, ¿de qué va esta persecución? ReflectReflexionar

The Void has a set amount of behavior: it wanders, chases, eats tilemaps, and it ends your run on contact. What this means or why this might be happening is up to you to decide. Why is the player running here?

Brainstorm a few details about your chase. Ask some questions about what's going on around the player, and try to describe the place using any TileMap or art assets you can find in the FileSystem.

Next you'll build out the environment using existing tiles and assets. Not all of this brainstorming will end up on screen, and it doesn't need to. What it gives you is an impression of what your world should look like, and what it should feel like to run through it.Después construirás el entorno usando casillas y recursos que ya existen.

For teams only: work on separate sub-branches.Solo para equipos: trabajad en sub-ramas separadas.

Working as a team?¿Trabajáis en equipo?

void-challenge is your team's shared challenge branch. When teammates are working at the same time, make separate from it. Before you split up, agree on clearly different jobs so you are not changing the same objects or parts of the project. The example below shows one way to divide the work.void-challenge es la rama de reto compartida de tu equipo.

├─tilemap

These are only examples. You might split the work into building the TileMap, setting up the Void chase, and adding decorative assets. The important part is to agree on who is working on what before you split up.Son solo ejemplos.

Open your void scene and paint a stretch of world with the TileMap nodes. The player needs somewhere to flee: a run long enough that reaching the far end feels challenging.

Don’t skip the Painting with Terrains demo in step 1 below. Terrains are a kind of smart tiling: pick a tile type and drag, and Godot works out which edge and corner pieces to drop in so the tiles connect cleanly, so you never hunt for the right piece.

Steps 1–3Pasos 1–3

  1. Select one of the existing TileMap layers in the Scene tree, then use the painting tools in the toolbar to paint new places to run. You can also remove tiles with the eraser.
  2. Add a new TileMap layer if you need one: a new layer, and a TileSet, for when the tiles already in the scene don't cover what you want.

Want more detail on adding your own layer? The Setting up a new scene in Godot guide shows you how to build a scene with your own TileMap layers and TileSets.¿Quieres más detalle sobre añadir tu propia capa?

  3. Run the scene and test the route yourself.

The Void Spreading Enemy and a called Enemy Path are already in your scene, but the enemy isn't fully set up yet. You'll connect it to both the Void Layer and Enemy Path, then shape the route and adjust the chase.

Steps 4–7Pasos 4–7

  1. Select Void Spreading Enemy in the Scene tree. In the Inspector, find the two settings that aren't assigned yet: Void Layer and Idle Patrol Path.
  2. Connect the enemy to the parts it needs: set to the scene's existing Void tile layer, and set Idle Patrol Path to .Conecta el enemigo a las partes que necesita: asigna a la capa de casillas Void que ya existe en la escena, y asigna Idle Patrol Path a .
The Void Spreading Enemy Inspector: the Void Layer and Idle Patrol Path settings each show an Assign button that has not been assigned yet.
Connect the Void Spreading Enemy to the Void layer and Enemy Path.
  3. Run the scene and see what changed. The Void Spreading Enemy should now follow Enemy Path and spread Void as it moves. If either part isn't working, go back and check the two Inspector assignments.
  4. Now select Enemy Path in the Scene tree and shape the chase. Its Path2D already has a short starter route, so use the Path2D tools above the viewport to add, move, or delete points until it goes where you want. Then and playtest as you build: the path, the enemy's speed, and anything the player has to move around all affect whether the chase feels too easy, too hard, or exciting.

Want more than one Void Spreading Enemy? You can duplicate it and connect the copy to another Path2D. Each enemy can have its own route.¿Quieres más de un Void Spreading Enemy? Puedes duplicarlo y conectar la copia a otro Path2D. Cada enemigo puede tener su propia ruta.

Dress the world with decorative assetsViste el mundo con elementos decorativos CreateCrear

Placing on top of your tiles (like houses, trees, rocks, or signs) will help shape both the gameplay feel and the narrative of your chase. You don't need to draw new art for this small challenge. Try instead to use what the StoryQuest Kit already offers you: PNG files or images in the FileSystem. How creative can you get with existing assets?

Steps 8–10Pasos 8–10

  1. Take a look at the few assets already placed in the scene and consider whether your chase might include them. Remember, you can right-click any node in the SceneTree to duplicate it.Fíjate en los pocos elementos que ya están colocados en la escena y piensa si tu persecución podría incluirlos.
  2. Search the FileSystem for PNG files (image files), but also check out the “Scenes” folder for characters or props that might be interesting. The scene files here are full components with collision shapes and could serve as obstacles for the chase.
  3. Make sure to playtest your chase!¡Asegúrate de probar tu persecución jugándola!
