OverviewVistazo general

Godot is a game engine like Unity, Unreal, or Gamemaker. It's a program that makes it easier to work on games by giving us tools to work quicker and be more creative. Each game you work on is it's own folder. This folder contains all the resources, scenes, scripts, and settings for each project. A mouse is preferred when working with Godot!

Here, you can see the entire project and all it's files. A Godot project is just a fancy folder! Just like files on a computer, you can double click to open them, right click to edit or delete files, and you can drag in new files to add them into the project.

Every file in a Godot project is a Scene, a Resource, or a Script. You can tell them apart from their extension!

The main way you'll be working on your game is by editing Scenes. Your game can be built from different scenes put together. They can be Levels, Characters, Tools; really anything you'd like!

You can open up a scene from your filesystem by double clicking it. When you open up a new scene, you'll see a lot of new options. For right now, focus on the top middle, called your Workspaces. There is 2D, 3D, Script, and Game. (You can ignore the Asset Store).Puedes abrir una escena desde tu filesystem haciendo doble clic en ella.

The 2d and 3d workspaces are the main views of your scene. When editing the code for your game, you'll be using the script tab, and when playtesting you'll be using the game tab.

The Workspaces run across the top. The scene tabs and the toolbar are the two rows just beneath them.

One down, you can see the Scene Tabs. This shows every "active" scene you have. Just like a web browser, you can change your current scene by clicking on it's tab. Close out of scenes using the X, add new scenes using the Plus, and use the arrows to navigate between many tabs.

The Scene Tabs — one per open scene.

One further down, you can see the Toolbar. This will change the mode you are editing your scene in. By default it is Select Mode, which allows you to select, edit, and drag.

The Toolbar sets the mode you're editing in.La Toolbar define el modo en el que editas.

NoteNota

The third option, the Move Mode, is very helpful when working with a complex scene. It will only move whatever is currently selected, making it easier to avoid mis-clicking something.

Lastly we have the biggest section, the Viewport. This is your main window into the current scene, and the primary way you'll be editing it! You can navigate the viewport by using the scrollwheel to zoom in and out, and middle clicking and dragging to pan around your view. If you're using a trackpad, you can use two fingers to zoom and the scrollbars to pan the view.

The building block of Godot is Nodes: pre-built components that do things like play sounds or display an image. Every scene is built from many different nodes that work with eachother to make something more complex. Each node also has many different Properties that change how they behave!

The Create New Node panel — a searchable list of the node types you can add to a scene.

Take a look at the top left panel. This is the SceneTree, it is a list of every node inside the current scene. Like folders, nodes can be under other nodes. Scenes can even have other scenes inside them! Each scene however must have at least one node at the top, called the "Root" node. Just like the filesystem, you can edit the current scene here by adding, moving, or deleting the nodes.Fíjate en el panel de arriba a la izquierda.

To add new nodes, use the plus button at the top of the SceneTree and choose a new node. If you already have a scene to add, like an enemy or a collectable, you can make a copy of them in the scene by pressing the link button.

NoteNota

When creating a node or adding a scene, the node currently selected in the SceneTree will be the "parent" of the newly created node. Make sure you have the right node highlighted!

The SceneTree, top-left. Main is the "Root" node, with its children beneath it.El SceneTree, arriba a la izquierda.

When you have a node selected, you will see it's properties shown on the right hand panel. This is the Inspector, a list of every property inside the highlighted node. Properties help to quickly change the behavior of a node. Imagine you have a player node. It may have a "speed" property you can change to make the player's walk faster or slower.

Select a node (Player, left) and its properties — like Speed — appear in the Inspector on the right.

For every node, you will see two different types of properties:Para cada nodo, verás dos tipos distintos de propiedades:

  • Values: Numbers, text, "true or false" (boolean), or lists of other values.
  • Resources: An asset, or a bundle of values and other resources.

Values are the most basic pieces of data, while Resources are more complicated. In fact, almost every other file that isn't a Scene or a Script in your project is a Resource!

ValuesValoresResourcesRecursos
Can be saved as a fileSe puede guardar como archivoNoNoYes
Can be shared between scenesSe puede compartir entre escenasNoNoYes
Property can be empty ("Null")La propiedad puede estar vacía ("Null")No*No*Yes
Can be an Image, Audio Clip, 3D Model...Puede ser una imagen, un clip de audio, un modelo 3D...NoNoYes

NoteNota

Sometimes when adding a new node or scene, they will need resources to be assigned into their properties. For example, the Sprite2D node will need you to import an image resource to display!
